Re: SRM and vSphere Replication - Reprotect very slow

Appreciate the reply and details.

I was told the same thing by support in that it's the same process too, but wouldn't the time taken depend on the size of VMDK's the checksum is running against?

In our case, the VM's in question came back in the production site in the same time it takes to power them on. After all, all we were doing is essentially powering up a VM that was powered off. (Of course, we had to clean up the SRM DB with a script and ensure replication was set up again). Might be worth adding that we were working with a 4 TB VM - which is where the checksum time took in the region of 6 hours, and it was much quicker to power off at DR and power on at PROD site.

Question :

Hi VMware,  just looking for the System Requirements for SRM 8.1 i don't find any information about which Windows Operating Systems are supported?  Is it even supported running as a virtual machine?  Many thanks!

Oh god...

That's what happens if you are searching for answers the whole day and doing tests for a concept (vSphere Replication doesn't seem to trigger pre-freeze scripts in SLES 11 if you quiesce the Filesystem, but manual snapshots do)....

I should have scrolled down and read more.

Thanks Ivan!

SRM 8.1 ABR CG's per Protection Group

Can we have multiple Array Based "consistency groups" with a single SRM 8.1 "protection group"?

If so, can those CG's come from different array's?

Assume SDRS and/or SvMotion will still only support moves among resources within a single CG without PG alert or becoming "un-configured"?

Thanks

Is SRM will work without linked mode of PSC from DR site to Prod site?

Hi,

We're having a problem installing vcsa on DR site (DR psc is joined to Prod psc). It always get error of "Unable to register ESX Agent Manager as an extension in vCenter Server" (ip range and vlan are the same for both site). Then most of the services of Prod vcsa and psc are unable to start. When we tried to reboot the vcsa and psc, webclient are inaccessible. So we re-install again the vcsa and psc on Prod site.

Now I tried to create their own SSO on psc on each site. Then the installation of vcsa is successful on DR site. So we have Prod site with vcsa and psc own SSO, and DR site vcsa and psc own SSO.

My question is, will SRM+vSphere Replication will work even in not in linked mode of the two PSC with their individual SSO?

Thank You in advance.

SRM 6.5.1 crash down at windows 2012 when starting IP customising at recovery site

Hi All

I have just  installed two vcenter and SRM server of 6.5

The vCenter version is 6.5.0 build 6816672

The SRM version is 6.5.1 build 6014840

All installed on windows server 2012

The version of vCenter and SRM are same for protected and recovery sites

The ESXi of hosts managed by protected site is 5.5 and all VMs on hosts are installed with vmware tool 9.4.11.42879

The ESXi of hosts managed by recovery site is 6.5

I have setup the SRM and recovery plan.

But the SRM of recovery site keeps crashed down when I test the recovery plan

I found if I customized the IP for the VM in the recovery plan, the SRM will crash down just when it started IP customization

If I didn't customized the IP, all went well and test plan success

But I need to customize the IP on the recovery site. And it is very bad with SRM crash down

I have checked the vmware-dr log , but I can't find any panic info in it!!

I retried many times (30 or more). And I found the SRM crash just after this log printed:

Acquired Clone Ticket, Logging into VC (https://vcenterip:443/sdk) via VIX

sometimes it will keep record some logs but I think they are not related.

I seared all the internet and can't find anything can help

So really need your help urgently

Apologize for I can't copy the log out as I can only take SS of them

Thanks!!!!!

Vsphere replication network

Hi I need some help regarding setting up a vmk for my vsphere replication 8.1.  I am currently running ESX 6.5 and trying to add a vmk for my Vsphere replication traffic which would reside on a different vlan.  How can i add multiple vlan through the vmk?  Both of my management and Vmotion is currently using one vlan, which means the gateway can only support that vlan.  If I add a new vmk for vsphere replication traffic, it won't route outside.  Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks

Andy

Hello,

  • FIrst of all,VMware always recommends to have same host build across sites if IP customization is involved. The reason being VMtools plays a major role in achieving IP customization.
  • Second of all,VMtools prior to 10.0 used VIX authentication and post 10.0 It uses different authentication mechanism which is adopted from 6.5 too

In my opinion upgrading your host to 6.5 and upgrading the appropriate VMtools on the servers at prod site should rectify the issue.

Mo-rover from 6.5 any server below 10.0 vmtools fails with the error message "customization is not supported for installed vmtools version" during test recovery.

I am certain that it is not possible to add VMs from multiple array pairs(When you have different array you have more than one array pair) to the same protection group, you can add multiple LUNs/datastores to the same PG if they belong to a consistency group on the array.

You can create multiple protection groups . Why do you need VMs from multiple array pairs in the same PG?

Re: SRM and vSphere Replication - Reprotect very slow

It is very evident that reprotect takes time the reason being, before it begins replicating the incremental data it runs checksum(source and destination VMDK) to compare block by block to understand from what point data should be replicate further.

So until the checksum is completed Synchronization is not going to be completed.

When you configure replication for the first it really does not matter as you do not have any data residing at the target site.So you dont see any checksum being performed.

Hope this helps.

Migrate SRM DB from SQL to Embedded

$

Hello

Is it possible or supported to migrate from a SQL Server DB (2012) to the embedded DB and keep data? I found posts about going from embedded to SQL but we want to do the opposite.

Currently running SRM 6.1.2.2

We are planning a migration to SRM 8.1.1 so I understand a workaround might be to do this and then to export config re-install with embeeded and import config but I wondered if there are alternative supported or unsupported options available on our current version.

Thank you

SRM Reprotect step initiate full vm recovery to replication site when using Vsphere Replication

We are using Vsphere Replication to replicate VMs to DR site and SRM, When we perform DR drill we experienced Reprotect step initiate a Full vm replication (Initial Replication) to recovery site. As mentioned in Vmware is should be checksum replication. Is there a configuration fault in this case or Can we slove this issue by using Array based replication, If it is possible with Array based replication what is the reason for that (different between array based replication vs vsphere replication on this manner ).

Split single Vcenter into two Vcenters for SRM

We have a single Vcenter (6.7U2) that manages two clusters. One cluster is our primary datacenter (Cluster-A),  the other is for our Colocation (Cluster-B). We have a SRM license that was never implemented, but now we want to. As I understand it, SRM works between two Vcenters. If this is so, my thought is to stand up a second Vcenter/Cluster, and join the hosts from the original Vcenter (either Cluster-A or B) to this new Vcenter.

My weak point is, do the datastore "connections" each host have migrate to the new Vcenter? I believe so, but others in my team have their doubts. I'm hoping one of you members may of "been there, done that", and can give me some feedback.

SRM with RPA Storage Replication - question about datastores

$

Got a question about SRM with RPA Storage Replication regarding datastores on both sites. We got Datastores Axxx at PDC and Bxxx at DRC. LUNs Axxx are replicated to their respective counterparts at DRC, Bxxx e.g. A001 is replicated by RPA to LUN B001. Both were visible/attached and mapped at their respective sites but when I used SRM with either Test or Run the datastores at DRC got unmapped and remapped with names of PDC datastores (Axxx) and after using either Cleanup or Reprotect those datastore are Unmapped and not mapped back with correct names (Bxxx).

Is there a possibility to get those settings into SRM? I'd like to have those datastores mapped at all times. I already changed the setting responsible for "fixing" names of datastore, they are not mapped as snap.... anymore.

Hey Guys,

I am trying to get SRM registered to the external PSC and am getting an Error 61 right at the end.

Has anyone seen this before?

SRM version 8.1.2 and VC and PSC appliances are running VCSA 6.5 Update 2c with an external PSC.

Cheers, Onil

Re: VMware SRM - API for Planned Failover option

Hi,

Could you please instruct how to handle certain SRM operation e.g.

- If the option SYNCDATA option $true fails to synchronize the VM, SRM Recovery Failover operation should fail and revert back VM to original state, should not perform unplanned failover

Please advise...
